On the 27th August at 5pm, as part of the Cardigan Quays festival, witness one of the biggest rowing races that Wales has to offer – a challenging mixture of river, estuary and sea rowing
The event pays homage to the legend of the Mermaid who saved a St Dogmaels fisherman’s life during a great storm in 1789.
The race, a handicapped race for 4 oared craft, will take place in Cardigan, and starts/ends at the old bridge taking in Cardigan Island a total length of 11 miles.
The handicap race is open to any fixed seat, coxed rowing craft. This is the first of what will be an annual event and with £1,000 of prize money we hope to attract crews from all over Britain and Ireland as the event develops.
The massed start at 5pm will provide a fine spectacle as the boats shoot the bridge on the long run down river before crossing the bar for the seaward leg of the race round the Island. The attached course plan shows where the best places are to view the race.
